Irene was Here

Hurricane Irene made her way to the east coast states from North Carolina, Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, Delaware,New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts wreaking havoc and taking lives.

As a New Yorker and one who loves and adores the city, I was concerned about the impact of Hurricane Irene. I thought about the damage that could occur and wondered how the billboards and enormous screens would handle the pounding that was on it's way. I thought of the homeless and prayed that they would find a place to stay. I thought of those who live in high rise buildings and prayed that they would not suffer from the wind and pounding rain. I thought of the stray animals and hoped that they too would make it through. All this worrying was even more intense as we watched CNN from our hotel suite in Indianapolis and kept in touch with our family - it was a nail biting experience.

Mayor Bloomberg made the necessary steps to ensure that the residents and businesses would be safe. Hospitals and Nursing home facilities moved their patients to other facilities where they would be away from what could be considered the danger zone. Area airports cancelled flights and closed the terminals. The entire transit system was out of service until further notice - now what more can I say?

Businesses took heed to the warnings and prepared accordingly - even Bloomingdales boarded up and alerted their customers that they would be closed via FaceBook & Twitter.

Hurricane Irene came to New York and although the city took a beating, it was not as severe as anticipated. However, in other areas of New York, Irene proved to have left quite an impression on her visit.

Watching Mayors and Governors from different states issue warnings and mandatory evacuations made it quite clear that this was serious. Unfortunately, there are those who defied the warnings and chose to stay to protect their homes, while others waited anxiously and excitedly to watch the storm. These people may have made it through Irene but their actions prove to be rather selfish and inconsiderate. While none of us can predict the severity of a hurricane or a storm, once a warning is issued, it would make sense to follow the orders. Not only are you endangering your life but you are now endangering the lives of the first responders (Emergency On Call Staff).

So while many may have thought that the efforts were overrated, there are those right here in New York who have felt the wrath of Irene.

As with all disasters, there will be a need for assistance. Find out how you can help.

The Choice Is Yours........ Part 3

What about the children? As you know by now, I carry a bull horn about childhood obesity and the responsibility that begins and ends with the parent. Yes I said it and I will not apologize for saying it even if I decide to run for President. Childhood obesity has become such a problem that children are now diagnosed with diseases that were once considered for adults (almost seniors). This is a serious matter that requires urgent intervention.

Thankfully, all is not lost. If you or someone you know has a child who is overweight, there is something that can be done. All you have to do is take charge, make the necessary changes as your child's health and wellness depends on you.

Dr. Sherri Sandifer of Texas Children's Hospital shares some healthy tips in packing food for your child/children. Then there is the issue on heart healthy children. Did you know that heart diseases begins during childhood? Well, you need to take a gander.

Finally, remember when Jessica Seinfeld came out with a cookbook filled with ways to feed your children nutritious meals without them knowing? Ms. Seinfeld discusses her sneaky tips and you can see the children eating and enjoying their meals. My children did not have the sneak attack not that I knew it was possible. The vegetables were visibly on their plates where they were able to get familiar with them, understand that they were a healthy part of their meal and eat them up or else - no desert. Now that they are older, they not only eat their vegetables and salads, they don't feel that their meals are complete without them. In any case, for those of you who may need help you can also find the links to Jessica Seinfeld's books below. I find her ideas to be quite clever and complete fun, sort of like pulling a prank on your kids for every meal :-)

Know your fats? Well, now you can learn more about the fats that works well for your health and wellness.

Got diabetes? There is something here for you too.

Then there is Dr. Ian Smith's 4 Day Diet which I can say, I tried and it worked. I am not a believer of diets in the sense of being on a diet, as I love to eat and my rationale is that I just need to exercise consistently. However, since I was preparing to interview Dr. Smith on the Health & Wellness Show, I wanted to prepare not only in reading the book and asking him random questions but I wanted to try it for myself to share my personal results with the listeners. The 4 Day Diet Book is not a typical diet book, it explores the various aspects of your mind and body. Where are you emotionally? Are you ready to take this on/commit? And best of all, you do not have to count a single calorie, it's all in the book. Yippeeeee!!!!

Psoriasis Awareness

August is Psoriasis Month and as I often say, an awareness day, week or month goes beyond that event as many who live with the specific disease, live with it daily. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation there are 7.5 million Americans with Psoriasis. Furthermore, the World Health Organization indicates that 2 to 3 percent of the population have been affected by psoriasis.

The Walk In My Skin program discusses the importance of funding, support groups, understanding the disease, as well as the concerns of treatments and advances in research. Thankfully, the outlook is promising as research shows that therapies and new drugs offers positive outcomes.
Learn more about Psoriasis you may even want to donate your time/money.

What do you know about the Latest Recall?

It's so important to know what the latest recalls are just in case you happen to have them in your home. While I may be wrong, I do not think that there are many people who are checking daily to see if there is a recall on any item in their home before they eat. Can you imagine waking up with these mini butter or chocolate croissants ready and available in your kitchen? Would you check in with the FDA or the company's website to see if there is a recall? Of course not. Well, there is a recall on these items and more.
Pull up your chair and prepare to check your list. This is quite a long list as reported via FDA.

Posh Bakery of Santa Clara, CA is recalling all its Butter Mini Croissants and Chocolate Mini-Croissants due to use of an egg wash that was undeclared on the product label. People who have allergies to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume this product.

Lafayette
Los Altos
Los Gatos
Mill Valley
Napa
Petaluma
Potrero Hill (San Francisco)
Redwood City
Roseville
Sacramento
San Mateo
San Rafael
San Ramon
Santa Cruz
Santa Rosa

The recall includes all expiration best-buy dates and lot codes. The recall includes all expiration best-buy dates and lot codes prior to and up until July 6, 2011.

Global Wellness, LLC. Hollywood, FL is expanding its voluntary nationwide recall of VIA XTREME ULTIMATE SEXUAL ENHANCER DIETARY SUPPLEMENT FOR MEN to the consumer level to include lot A032111. The product was distributed throughout the U.S. Puerto Rico, Barbados, and Canada to internet and retail consumers. Lot numbers #809013, 806030, and A032111 are covered in this recall.

The company has been informed by representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that laboratory analysis conducted by FDA for lot #809013, 806030, and A032111 found that the product contains sulfoaildenafil methanesulfonate, sulfosildenafil and dimethylsildenafil analogs of sildenafil. Sildenafil is an active ingredient of an FDA approved drug for erectile dysfunction (ED), making Via Xtreme Ultimate Sexual Enhancer Dietary Supplement for Men an unapproved drug. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. Additionally, the product may cause side effects, such as headaches and flushing.

No illnesses have been reported to Global Wellness, LLC to date in connection with these products.

The sale of this type of fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it. Symptoms of infection may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. If it spreads to the nervous system symptoms may include headache, stiff neck or confusion. The illness primarily impacts pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill.

One of my favorites is being recalled again :-(
McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., is recalling at the retail level one product lot (60,912 bottles) of TYLENOL®, Extra Strength Caplets, 225 count bottles, distributed in the U.S. The recalled product was manufactured in February, 2009. McNeil is taking this action following a small number of odor reports, including musty, moldy odor. The uncharacteristic musty, moldy odor has been linked to the presence of trace amounts of a chemical known as 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA).

This voluntary action is being taken as a precaution and the risk of serious adverse medical events is remote. TBA can generate an offensive odor and has been associated with temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal symptoms.
