Keep the Conversation Going - Voices of HIV

Everyone is so different, after all we are uniquely and wonderfully made. Why wait for World Aids Day, awareness month or a celebrity affected by the virus in order for us to bring out the alarms? For those living with HIV/AIDS, the health regimen serves as a daily reminder.

The Center for Disease Control has a wonderful campaign - Let's Stop HIV Together. Let's be sure to share as HIV/AIDS is still a disease that needs to be stopped.

Parents - Overweight Children and Heart Disease

Thank Goodness it's April 2nd. I would not want anyone to brush this off as an April Fools joke. After reading another published report on the health or lack of good healthy habits in children and the consequences which is far from a joke, it prompted me to blog about this major health concern. This is a problem that exists in higher proportions right here in the United States. There is a problem and it begins at home (I've said it before). The other problem is the blame that is passed on to the fast food restaurants and companies that make the snacks, candies, etc.

The biggest concern should be the effects that are now making it's impact on the children at younger ages. A study was conducted by Christina Shay, an epidemiologist at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The study included 673 teens between the ages of 12 to 19 years old. The participants were followed through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys for five years between 2005-2010. The survey indicates that less than half of U.S. adolescents are lacking exercise and have poor diets. The major concern is that it's highly likely that we are creating a new generation of heart-disease patients. The concerns of higher levels of impaired glucose tolerance, elevated levels of blood pressure, cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes must not be taken lightly.

The heart may take years of wear and tear before it fails, needs repair or shuts down completely. However, an early start to creating these problems only makes it worse for the teenager who will have to deal with complicated health issues at a time when their lives have only just begun.

Parents, what changes will you make? Today is a great day too start.

Have You Heard??? The Flu Season's Gone Wild!!!

It's all over the news. The World Health Organization, Center for Disease Control, National Institute of Health, local and statewide health organizations are all discussing the influenza outbreak particularly throughout the United States. Could this be one of the worst outbreaks we have had in a while. It certainly appears so. The big question is why? and... Did you get your flu shot? Well according to the latest news reports, there seems to be a shortage of the vaccine. It is confirmed by the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Thomas Frieden who said "We're hearing of spot shortages." I would say that speaks volumes. Perhaps it's time to head to your local pharmacy and find out if they are administering the vaccine there. The problem here is that the flu shots are normally administered in the fall and by this time they are almost finished. Looks like the manufacturers may have to come up with more - I'm sure they wont mind at all.

Interestingly, parents are discussing the flu out break calling other parents out on sending their sick child/children to school which causes their child to become sick. Meanwhile, jobs/bosses are telling their employees to get to work - flu and all. What's a parent to do? One cannot stay home with their child nor can they call out sick even if they have the flu. Ridiculous, I know but this is a very real issue.

Although the number of reported cases of flu have peaked in some areas; as the virus spreads to other states there are increased number of new cases. Sadly, there are reports of deaths which is rather frightening. In fact after reading an article that titled 'Flu Season Epidemic Likely a Boom for Funeral Homes and Death Care' I'm considering staying indoors until spring with as limited human contact as possible.

What's going on you ask? Let's hear what Dr. Francis Collins, the Director of the National Institute of Health has to say.

Meningitis - The Concerns Are Heightened

You go to your doctors office with complaints of back pain and you are given an injection to alleviate the pain nothing alarming about that except shortly after, there is major breaking news of an outbreak which may have included several deaths. This is the big news of our day and there seems to be a number of cases reported throughout many states. Needless to say, the concerns are heightened.

Although the onset of symptoms is typically 1 to 4 weeks following injection, there are also reports of shorter and longer periods of time between injection and onset of symptoms. It is very important to contact your physician if you have any concerns.

As of October 10, 2012, CDC’s fungal disease laboratory has confirmed the presence of the fungus Exserohilum in 10 people with meningitis and the fungus Aspergillus in one person with meningitis.

According to the Center of Disease Control who is currently investigating the recent outbreak, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are coordinating a multistate investigation of meningitis among patients who received epidural steroid injections (medication injected into the spine). In several patients, the meningitis was found to be caused by a fungus that is common in the environment but rarely causes meningitis. This form of meningitis is not contagious. The source of the fungus has not yet been identified, and the cause of infections in the other patients is still being assessed.

If you have received any medication from one of the NECC products recalled on September 26 you should contact your physician.

Breastfeeding in Public - A Mother's Choice

What's all the fuss about Beyonce breastfeeding her baby in public? Is it really that big of a deal in this day and age where we claim to be a progressive society?

As a mother who breastfed all of my children, I know when it's feeding time, my breast begins to prepare for it and my baby wakes up simultaneously. It is the most incredible experience ever! It is also a moment where I find a spiritual connection of how amazingly equipped I am - I can give birth and nurture my off spring. So for me it did not matter when baby/nature calls, I respond.

What's most startling, is the fuss made about mothers breastfeeding in public. There are special brassieres made for mothers to breastfeed without exposing their full breast and in some cases where mothers have completely covered the baby with a blanket - still met opposition.

It is common knowledge that breast milk provides the baby with the essential nutrients to help with not only growth but also equips the body with the antibodies necessary to protect the baby from illnesses.

Furthermore, studies have indicated that breastfed babies have a decreased chance for allergies and dental caries. Breastfed babies are overall - healthier babies.

So whether you think that Beyonce fed her baby in public as a way to stand with the other mothers or she just knew it was time to feed her baby and that was all that matters - it's her choice to breastfeed Blue Ivy. Breastfeeding is not about being trendy, fashionable or fancy.

I just hope that our society wakes up and really get's it together. The news headlines with expressions of outrage for breast feeding in public is simply ridiculous. In my opinion, the benefits far outweighs the ignorant reactions.

Prime Season for Hantavirus

When all seems right with the world, things can suddenly go all wrong. Dr. David Hartstein, a 35year old husband and father of three young children began to feel sick with flu like symptoms that escalated to a high fever. In addition, he complained of having shortness of breath. At first it was thought to be a bug or Lyme disease but it all came to an abrupt end that left everyone in shock.

It all began to manifest after Dr. Hartstein cleaned his basement. It is there that health officials believe that he contracted the hantavirus. Hantavirus is transmitted from inhaling airborne desiccated mouse droppings. In fact, further testings from the Suffolk County Health Department and the CDC has confirmed that Dr. Hartstein's death was due to the hantavirus.

As we cover many health and wellness topics, we want to explore the ones that are sometimes overlooked. Many of us wont think twice about sweeping or cleaning our attic, basement or other areas that have we feel needs to be organized/maintained. However, we do not consider the potential dangers/risks that may affect our health as our goal is to clean up so that we may avoid any potential health hazards. In fact, Dr. Hartstein was cleaning after a flooding in their basement and had no idea that his life would end within the next two weeks.

It Can Happen to You - A Stroke

A new interest on strokes has surged with recent passing of famed saxophonist Clarence Clemons Jr.known for his amazing sound with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The Big Man as he is also called has accompanied many other artists from Aretha Franklin, Twisted Sister, Grateful Dead, Ringo Star and most recently Lady Gaga. The news of his death was met with great sadness as fans spontaneously gathered to pay respects

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 137,000 Americans die of a stroke each year. It is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Everyone is at risk, however, as we get older, the chances of having a stroke increases.

As many mourn the loss of this musical icon, we must be informed about the disease and also encouraged by others who have survived.

Staying Aware - AIDS

2011 and the Center for Disease Control reports that The New York State Department of Health is recommending a shorter HIV and hepatitis screening window and nucleic acid testing (NAT) for living organ donors following a recent HIV transmission from a kidney donor to a recipient in New York City. The advisory also urges hospitals to question living donors about risky behaviors, including injection drug use. This is the first documented case of HIV transmission by way of a live-donor transplant since improvements in the screening process were initiated in 1985, said a health department spokesperson. The hospital, which, in the interest of patient privacy, the spokesperson declined to identify, followed appropriate protocols in screening the kidney donor. However, the donor apparently had unsafe sex after testing and before surgery to harvest the organ. “Of course this is a rare case, but we felt like we needed to alert centers to this possibility so they can talk to potential donors about risks and do testing closer to the time of surgery,” the spokesperson said. The advisory calls for HIV and hepatitis B and C testing to be performed within 14 days of living-donor donation using NAT, which can detect virus antibodies weeks to months before standard blood tests. NAT is not recommended for organs from deceased donors due to time constraints, as organs soon begin to deteriorate. Infectious disease screening has virtually eliminated HIV transmission through donated organs, blood or tissue. CDC’s most recent HIV-specific organ donation screening recommendations were issued in 1994; updated guidelines from the agency are expected this year.
It was 1981 when the first cases of what is now known as AIDS were reported in the U.S. During the 1980s there was a rapid increase in the number of reported AIDS cases and AIDS deaths. The lack of knowledge had many people fighting to isolate the people with the disease. As the cases grew from gay men to women, children, seniors and drug abusers the debates were intense. It was brutal.

Somewhere between then and now efforts to manage the disease have improved yet it is not good enough. Yes, I said it! It was during the 1980's that my brother contracted the disease through a blood transfusion from the place where one goes to be made well - the hospital. Surprisingly, the screening for HIV/AIDS was not enforced at that time. Many families lost their loved ones due to contaminated blood. Unfortunately, that was then and is in no way acceptable now. Not with the advances made through the awareness and fundraising campaigns, not with the powerful support of the celebrities or even most importantly, the researchers/scientists who have developed drugs to maintain the disease while working to find the cure - NO!
We must be ahead and proactive in taking the precautions, leading confidently, being the exemplar of delivering medical care. The old proverb 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' is oh so true and appropriate in everything especially - health.

Get a Clue - Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has long had it's supporters starting with the Healthcare Community. Sadly, the issue of breastfeeding has made the headlines in a political arena. While the First Lady of the United States encouraged mothers to breastfeed their babies,  Mrs. Sarah Palin found a way to make a mockery of the efforts to promote healthy options. Breastfeeding is not an issue to debate for political points but instead it should be viewed for the health benefits to both mother and child.

As a mother, I was given the choice to either breastfeed or use formula to feed my babies. After learning about the benefits for my baby's health, it was a on. I wanted nothing but the best for my children and what an incredible way to start their lives setting them up with building a strong immune system and much more. Yeah me!!!!

For refresher's sake and for those who may not know, let's see what clues the Health Officials, Medical Professionals and Healthcare Community has to say about the benefits of breastfeeding:

Update - H1N1 Important PHISHING SCAM - CDC Sponsored State Vaccination Program for H1N1‏

This is an important message from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Fraudulent emails referencing CDC-sponsored State Vaccination Program
(December 1, 2009)
CDC has received reports of fraudulent emails (phishing) referencing a CDC sponsored State Vaccination Program.

The messages request that users must create a personal H1N1 (swine flu) Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov website. The message then states that anyone that has reached the age of 18 has to have his/her personal Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov site.

The CDC has NOT implemented a state vaccination program requiring registration on www.cdc.gov. Users that click on the email are at risk of having malicious code installed on their system. CDC reminds users to take the following steps to reduce the risk of being a victim of a phishing attack:

Do not follow unsolicited links and do not open or respond to unsolicited email messages.
Use caution when visiting un-trusted websites.

Puff Puff - Give It Up!

Smoking can be traced back for centuries with pictorial records as far back as the 11th century. In 1864, the first American cigarette factory opened, producing around 20 million cigarettes a year. By 1898, there was a concern about the effects of cigarettes and a ban was placed in Tennessee. Two years later, Iowa, North Dakota and Washington decided to outlaw the sale of cigarettes. By 1901, 43 of the 45 states were actively engaged in support of banning cigarettes. In that same year,3.5 billion cigarettes and 6 billion cigars were sold. According to the reports of that era, 4 out of 5 men smoked a cigar at least once a day.

As time went on, the debates continued. Television commercials were banned, as well as smoking in airplanes, buses, trains, hotels, restaurants and of all places the bars where having a drink and a smoke goes hand in hand. Community activists held meetings and spoke out against the cigarette companies that appeared to target the youth demanding that their billboard advertisements be removed. The surgeon general placed warnings on the boxes to warn that cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health yet smoking continues. Some states raised the prices on cigarettes, increased taxes yet the tobacco companies are thriving. The anti smoking commercials are graphic with their message. Even closer to home, the loss of family and friends - have not deterred others from smoking.

What will it take to give it up?

Here are the current statistics

Clearly, quitting is certainly not an easy task. It is a habit that has developed over time - one that has become a source of comfort during social gatherings and stressful periods. In some cases, smokers who have had the success of giving it up have found that a traumatic event triggered the urge to return to smoking and many of them have and are having a difficult time giving it up once again. There are many programs that are available to help smokers regain control of their lives and their health.
